Wantagh, located in the Southeastern portion of Nassau County, is a recreational paradise that offers easy access to all areas of Long Island. Wantagh took its name from the Indian sachem who led two Algonquin groups in the area. Wantagh was first settled by Europeans in the mid-1600s when a boundary was established between Dutch and English territories. After Sunrise Highway was built in 1929, hotels followed and Wantagh became a resort fishing area. When the Jones Beach Causeway opened in 1929, the community became a gateway to the popular beach. Today Wantagh has a population of 18,000 and the city's Wantagh Park is one of the largest in Long Island and offers attractions including a swimming complex, a boating marina and a launch ramp, a fishing pier, athletic fields, a new playground and more. Adjacent to Wantagh Park north of Merrick Road is a 54-acre natural area that includes a large pond frequented by large numbers of native waterfowl and nature trails that wind through a woodland.
